A Daniel Dow Collection (1732-83)
A Collection of Ancient Scots Music for the Violin, Harpsichord, or German Flute never before printed. (ca 1775), Edinburgh, Scotland.
A rare early work available in some libraries and private collections and now made available as a digital book by Taigh na Teud Music Publishers. Daniel Dow was a music teacher in Edinburgh, he particularly taught guitar. A dance called “Athol House and Ossian’s Hall was composed by him. Many of his tunes are excellent and great favourites: “Athol House”, “Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk’s Reel” “Bonnie Annie” and “Lady Charlotte Murray’s Reel”. Many of his compositions were re- named in various other collections by Nathanial Gow and others when including them in their own collections. Daniel Dow made one of the first collections of Gaelic airs, giving their Gaelic titles and John Glen the collector considered “ that many of his tunes are excellent”. Dow died at the age of 51 in January 1783 of a fever.

The Angus Fraser Collection
245 tunes dating back to 18th Century Scotland and earlier.
This is a newly typeset complete version of a manuscript found in the 1950's which is considered to be 'the most important collection of Scottish Gaelic Airs to be recovered in the last 100 years' and the only seemingly authentic collection of Scottish harp music ever recovered. Some of the pieces are after the style of pibroch and some according to Angus Fraser relate to the old variation style of harp playing. Angus’s grandparents lived at the time of the last harpers and both they and his father had a great interest in Gaelic and instrumental music which they passed on to him. This book was never published as Angus died young around 1874. Taigh na Teud has taken the original manuscript copy, with permission from Edinburgh University Library, and published it in one volume. The original intention of Angus Fraser was that it was to be in 4 parts. There are 245 tunes and they have been reproduced as close to the original form as is possible. We hope we have presented it as Angus Fraser would have wished it. This is a fascinating book for harpers, fiddlers, Gaelic singers and pipers and all those interested in studying and learning tunes from the past.

The Athole Collection
The Athole Collection of the Dance Music of Scotland by James Stewart Robertson.
This book was compiled by James Stewart Robertson of Edradynate, Perthshire, who was a founding member of the Edinburgh Highland Reel & Strathspey Society. He published his collection of 870 strathspeys, reels, jigs, hornpipes and country dances in 1884. The current edition was published by Balnain House in Inverness in 1996. They have produced a working volume for today’s players, omitting the rudimentary bass lines but leaving the melody lines unaltered. The music is grouped by keys, and the juxtaposition of strathspeys and reels encourages the playing of the tunes in sets. The book contains an introduction by the well known Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser and it is spiral bound for ease of playing.

The Glen Collection of Scottish Dance Music
Reprint in one large volumeof the famous Glen Collection of Scottish Dance Music first published in 1891 and 1895 in two volumes.
THE GLEN COLLECTION OF SCOTTISH DANCE MUSIC, reprinted by Highland Music Trust in 2001, is a welcome source book for all with an interest in Scottish music. John Glen was a music publisher in Edinburgh, who amassed a unique portfolio of the great 18th and 19th century collections. In 1891 he published his first volume of tunes from these earlier works, including the compositions of some of the greatest composers, and followed this with a second volume in 1895. The books contain 292 selected tunes from Marshall, the Gow family, Mackintosh and others (all meticulously attributed), most of which are not available elsewhere. Importantly, however, they also include Glen’s biographies of the composers and publishers and notes on the earlier collections and sources of the tunes. Scholars have long recognised the quality of Glen’s research, and his text is regarded as authoritative. The reprint combines both volumes and reproduces the text in its entirety. The tunes are printed in the treble lines only, and grouped into keys, with a composite index. There is a foreword by Charles Gore, author of the Scottish Fiddle Index. There are 138 pages, and the book is available in soft cover and also in a limited edition hard cover version (200 copies only).

The Malcolm McDonald Collection
First printed as four single volumes in 1788. Fiddle researchers and players looking for interesting new material will find this a fascinating book.
Malcolm McDonald lived around Dunkeld in the 18th century and was a contemporary of Niel Gow. It is said he played the cello for Niel Gow after the death of Niel's brother. Little is known of his personal life and he left only his collection of music to represent his talent. Many of the tunes are said to be his own compositions but it is known that some, especially after the first volume, were composed by others. The four collections were originally only available as single volumes and as they were printed first in 1788 access to them has always been limited to libraries or private collections. Taigh na Teud has now made them available in one volume which contains over 130 fascinating tunes.

The Marshall Collections
6 Collections of the music of William Marshall (1748 - 1833)
6 Collections of the music of William Marshall (1748 - 1833) of Fochabers in Morayshire, one of Scotland's greatest fiddler-composers. These include the 2-volume Collection of Strathspey Reels etc of 1781-1793, Marshall's Scottish Airs, Melodies etc. of 1822 and the 1845 posthumous collection, with other smaller publications. Of the 317 tunes, at least 37 are repeated, often with different titles and changes in the music, but in the interests of historical accuracy we have printed each Collection in its entirety, along with a table showing the repetitions.
The tunes represent just one facet of the talents of this remarkable man - athlete, dancer, astronomer, clockmaker, surveyor etc - described by Robert Burns as the first (ie finest) composer of strathspeys of the age.
The book contains a foreword by James Alexander, Director of the Fochabers Fiddlers, and an introduction by Charles Gore. The Memoir published with the posthumous collection is reproduced. The music has been faithfully reprinted in clear type with the minimum of editing.

The Patrick McDonald Collection
This Collection of Highland Gaelic Airs by Patrick McDonald was first published in 1784 and contains the tunes to many Gaelic songs of that period from all over Scotland.
This book gives a fascinating look at life and music in the 18th and 19th centuries. Patrick McDonald came from a very musical and musically literate family which was unusual at this time and this music collection and that of his brother Joseph who published the first book of written pipe music “A Compleat Theory of the Scots Highland Bagpipe” are of the greatest interest to all researching pipe, fiddle, harp and Gaelic songs of the period. There are two introductions totalling eleven pages with the original book which for researchers are invaluable in their descriptions of both the music and way of life at this time.He gives reference to tunes in the collection which he remembers as being the ancient harp music played in the Highlands. The clarsach had already fallen out of use by this time but it was still within living memory so the references are invaluable today to harp players seeking original tunes. There is also a wealth of other fiddle, pipe and song material in this exciting early collection. There are early versions of many well known tunes. In addition to all the original notes and introductions Taigh na Teud was fortunate to have the help of Roderick D. Cannon, Allan MacDonald and personal notes on the book from the William Matheson’s own copy. These have been included to help with further research. Roderick Cannon supplied possible names for many of the unnamed tunes in the North Highland Reels and Country Dances section.

The Skye Collection
The famous Skye Collection, which first appeared in 1887 and was later reprinted in a smaller edition, has been out of print for many years.
The famous Skye Collection, which first appeared in 1887 and was later reprinted in a smaller edition, has been out of print for many years. The title page indicates that it included "the best Reels & Strathspeys extant embracing over four hundred tunes collected from all the best sources, compiled and arranged for violin and piano by Keith Norman Macdonald." It is hoped that this new edition, which includes all the tunes from the earlier first and second editions, will meet the demand from Scottish music enthusiasts to have available again one of the outstanding collections of original airs. Many of the tunes are originally for bagpipe, but all of the tunes have been presented here in piano arrangements with melody and accompaniment. Violinists or fiddlers, pipers, or other melody instruments may double the melody. The original compiler's 1887 preface is also included, which provides insights into the sources and proper interpretation of the tunes.
